Despite 76% of pregnant women admitting to problems such as bleeding gums and toothaches, a recent study found that nearly half of women didn’t maintain regular dental visits while pregnant.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can worsen oral issues such as gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Despite the correlation between oral health and overall wellness, many medical professionals don’t discuss dental care with their patients. While 97% of women saw their general doctor or obstetrician during pregnancy, less than half reported that their oral health came up during those visits.
Postpartum dental visits also are extremely important, since dental hygiene habits may slip once the baby arrives. 36% of new moms say they brush and floss less often than before the baby was born.
